The Back River Watershed is comprised of a numbers of small creeks and tributaries.

Its Northwest Branch and Southwest Branch merge east of Hampton before the river empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

The lower river contains numerous marinas, launch ramps, and other facilities.

The community of Poquoson, Virginia is located along the north side of the river.

Like other Hampton Roads waterways, the Back River played an important role in local history. Once a vital supply route for Hampton, the river had a strong influence on the city’s layout and architecture. Today the Back River remains an important feature of the City of Hampton.
