Like other Hampton Roads waterways, the Back River played an important role in local history. Once a vital supply route for Hampton, the river had a strong influence on the city’s layout and architecture. Today the Back River remains an important feature of the City of Hampton.

The Back River Watershed is comprised of a numbers of small creeks and tributaries. Its Northwest Branch and Southwest Branch merge east of Hampton before the river empties into the Chesapeake Bay.
